Welcome to my world of art. My journey began with formal art education, evolving through years of exploration across diverse mediums. From the raw power of stone to the delicate touch of watercolours, each piece is a chapter in my ongoing artistic discovery. I am Neal Hickman, and this is where my passion takes form.

The artist

My inspiration often stems from the profound beauty of African art, particularly in my stone work. I believe that within every raw material, be it stone, clay, metal, or wood, a masterpiece lies hidden, waiting to be revealed. My role is simply to uncover what nature has already placed there, exploring techniques and styles refined over many years since graduating from art college.

Where every chisel tells a story

My stone work is a dialogue with the material itself. I've always believed that the actual piece is waiting to come out, hidden within the stone. All I do is unveil the work by chiseling away. If a piece falls away unexpectedly, then I simply carry on, as that must be the way. This organic process ensures each sculpture tells its own unique story.

A spectrum of artistic discovery

While stone holds a special place, my artistic exploration extends far beyond. I experiment with clay for pictorial and realistic pieces, metal for its form, and wood for its natural warmth. My repertoire also includes fine art portraits in drawing and watercolours, capturing the essence of people and animals. Each medium offers a new path for creative expression.

"Feel the form, see the story."

I hope my art resonates with you, allowing you to understand my dedication to the medium. My stone work is designed to be tactile, inviting you to feel its texture and form, connecting you directly to the material. My clay work, while more pictorial, aims for realism and immediate appreciation. Ultimately, I just want people to like what they see and feel a connection to the art.
